I’m not keen to act in Bollywood, says southern star Vikram

He is a superstar down south and has done over 40 movies. But actor Vikram, who is excited about playing a negative role in Mani Ratnam’s Hindi-Tamil bilingual “Ravan” that also stars Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai, says he has no intentions of joining the Hindi film industry.

“I’m not keen to act in Hindi movies. Language is a problem. An actor should understand what a director wants him to do. Working in South Indian films gives me great satisfaction. However, I would love to do a movie with filmmakers like Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra or Sanjay Leela Bhansali,” Vikram said in an interview.

Vikram can’t stop raving about the “Ravan” director. “Mani Ratnam is like a soldier on the war front when he is at the shooting spot. He comes out with scenes that capture reality without exaggeration.”

The National Award-winning actor, who has given hits like “Sethu”, “Pithamagan” and “Anniyan”, will be seen in a negative role in the movie and says he loves to identify with the characters he portrays.

“I love to identify myself with the characters I play in my movies. I try to get the character in my looks, then slowly get accustomed to mannerisms. In a month, I would live and sleep like him,” said Vikram, whose mega budget movie “Kanthaswamy” directed by Susi Ganesan has just hit the screens.

Excerpts from an interview:

Q: How thrilled are you to be part of a Mani Ratnam film?

A: Directors like Mani Ratnam and Bala strive for perfection. It’s always a pleasure to be associated with such people. For “Ravan”, we shot in the dense forests of Kerala, crowded streets of Kolkata and the cold climate of Madhya Pradesh.

Mani Ratnam is like a soldier on the war front when he is at the shooting spot. He comes out with scenes that capture reality without exaggeration. I’m learning more about cinema working with a person like Mani Ratnam. Working with Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai was a different experience. I was impressed with their commitment to excel.

Q: How do you manage to get under the skin of your characters?

A: I love to identify myself with the characters that I play in my movies. I would strive to get the character in my looks, then slowly get accustomed to mannerisms. In a month, I would live and sleep like him. That made me successful in films like “Sethu”, “Pithamagan” and “Anniyan”.

Q: Any plans to join Bollywood?

A: I’m not keen to act in Hindi movies. Language is a problem. An actor should understand what a director wants him to do. Working in South Indian films gives me great satisfaction. However, I would love to do a movie with filmmakers like Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra or Sanjay Leela Bhansali.

Q: What is your dream role?

A: I play an interesting and

unique role in my next film to be directed by Selvaraghavan. I’m eagerly waiting to start shooting for the film. Tamil cinema has grown by leaps and bounds. If we concentrate on doing movies close to reality, we can scale greater heights.

Q: Are you interested in direction?

A: Of course. Every actor would aspire to wield the megaphone one day. Having worked with Mani Ratnam, Shankar and Bala, obviously there is an urge in me to test my directorial skills.

Q: What About the delay in your just released “Kanthaswamy”.

A: Some of my movies take time to see the light of the day, but I forget all pains once people throng theatres in large numbers and appreciate it. I always wanted to talk less and work more. I know the value of success because I had to work very hard for more than a decade to achieve it.

‘Paiyya’ may overtake ‘Aayirathil Oruvan’

Apparently, it’s an era of “big tickets’ getting stuck halfway due to various constraints. Naturally, R. Ravendran of Dream Valley Entertainment doesn’t seem to be excluded, as he isn’t able to make better deals with distributors for his “Aayirathil Oruvan’.
“Aayirathil Oruvan’ churned out at the cost of Rs.30 Crores hasn’t yet completed with post-production works still going on. With editing works vividly getting through the studios of Chennai, sound mixing has been taken down across a well renowned studio in London.
If what we heard from sources is absolutely true, then it’s sure to be confirmed that Karthi may have his “Paiya’ hitting screens prior, or on the pars with “Aayirathil Oruvan’. Director Lingusamy seems to have already completed 85 percent of the filming and post-production works are carried through alternatively herein Chennai.

‘Kanden Kadhalai’ gears for promotions

It all started off as a wavelet and eventually transcended as magniloquent sensation. “Kanden Kadhalai’– remake of yesteryear Bollywood blockbuster “Jab We Met’ is rolling fast on its postproduction works. Meanwhile, G. Dhananjayan of Moser Baer is endeavoring through vigorous promotional activities across Tamil Nadu.
The promotional vans embellished with colorful visuals of “Kanden Kadhalai’ are traveling towards all parts of Tamil Nadu. The crew has been involved in shooting out simple and interesting questions to the people of various localities. The winners are handed with goodies and audio CDs.
Producer Dhananjayan says, “The campaign is very successful and is creating good excitement around the film and music everywhere. The people are curious to know when the film is releasing and most of them know the film details by now. The vans are playing the songs continuously, thus creating more interest in the film and music. The van campaign covers the entire TN and will end on 31 August 2009.”
He further adds, “The idea has been very successful in bringing in awareness about the film and also excites the people to look for the film, when it is releasing.”

Special bus for ‘Kanthaswamy’ promotion

Maybe, Vikram’s latest “Kanthaswamy’ would’ve witnessed mixed reviews by film critics, but the film is topping the charts on box office, with stupendous collections. With the complete first week brimmed with house-packed shows, producers and distributors have kick-started with promotional works to ensure more crowd for next couple of weeks as well.
Abhirami Ramanathan, who has acquired release rights for this film has specifically designed a luxurious bus. Starting its journey on 11 a.m, the bus will keep moving towards all areas of Chennai. Inside the bus, exclusive video songs, teasers and photo gallery of “Kanthaswamy’ will be available. Also, those wishing to watch the film can book tickets in this mobile exhibition.
Susi Ganeshan, Producer Kalaipuli S Dhanu and Abhirami Ramanathan flagged the bus, for it to start its journey.

Vishal to support poor women affected with uterus cancer

“Believe, when you are the most unhappy, there is something for you to do in the world. As long as you can sweeten another’s pain, life is not in vain” –Actor Vishal, is much adhered to these touching lines quoted by the unforgettable Helen Keller.
As an act of accomplishing this saying, the actor has joined hands with Helios Hospital extending his service of alleviating poor women affected with perilous uterus cancer. Helios Hospital is one of the leading health care centers situated in the outskirts of Chennai.
Actor Vishal along with ace filmmaker P. Vasu, Sun Network’s Vice President Hansraj Saxena, Manimegalai Thangam Thennarasu were present on the occasion of the inaugural ceremony.
“Whenever I get injury, my driver takes me immediately to Helios Doctors. I got 25 such heavy injuries on my body, but the proficient doctors from Helios healed them,” said Vishal who further said, “For women, uterus cancer is one of the worst, notorious disease in the world. Now I came to know that Helios Hospital has introduced a new treatment for this disease. According to the doctors, just 3 injections are enough to cure the decease for a lifetime. But the treatment is a costly one, and not bearable for poor. So I decided to share the expense of this treatment for poor women who take this treatment”

Chaya Singh denies marriage rumors

Recently, buzz was doing rounds that actress Chaya Singh is married to a Hyderabad based Hardware tycoon. The actress apparently is not very happy with this rumor published in the media channels.
Chaya Singh, who shot to fame with her scintillating show in “Thiruda Thirudi’ hasn’t got any big offers in hand as of now.
The actress says, “It’s true that I haven’t signed more films. Because, I just don’t want to be clichéd actresses who dance with heroes, run around the bush, and disappear. I am always concerned about my prominence in the films I choose. Probably, this could’ve urged gossip columnists to pen their own stories regarding the marriage issue.”
Chaya Singh, who’s currently shooting for a mystery-thriller “Anandapurathu Veedu’ produced by director Shankar confirms that she has no idea about getting married for the next couple of years.

Priya V is ready for her next film

Filmmaker Priya, once an associate of Mani Rathnam made her debut directorial with “Kanda Naal Mudhal’ followed by “Kannamoochi Enadaa’. But, it has been a very long time since Priya commenced her next project.
Speaking to the media channels, she utters, “I wanted to make a film completely different from my previous films, and it took a long time to complete the script works. But soon, the star-casts Prithviraj and Bhavana became busy with their own projects. We will start shooting for this yet-to-be titled film from November.”
When asked on the details about other members in crew, Priya stated that they’re yet to be finalized.

Cheran’s vigorous promotion for ‘Pokkisham’

Perhaps, it’s something of a bold attempt. Director Cheran’s “Pokkisham’ that hit the screens a couple of weeks ago (august 14) got not so-good verdicts. Immediately, Cheran trimmed a few sequences to reduce the lengthy duration (3 and half hours) and he could witness few changes.
Meanwhile, the filmmaker has decided to turn more spotlights on “Pokkisham’. He will visit 10 prominent theatres of Tamil Nadu and will hold the screening of his film. It has been confirmed that actress Padmapriya too will accompany Cheran throughout this promotional activity.
The duo will first visit the theatre in Trichy, followed by Tanjore, Coimbatore and so on. Unlike other films, Cheran hasn’t demanded producers to spend money for these statewide promotional activities.

‘I am eagerly waiting for AO’ -Sonia Agarwal speaks out

Maybe, Selvaraghavan and Sonia Agarwal have split-up, but they’re ready to work in future projects if situations insist. The duo had recently applied for divorce with mutual consent and Sonia speaks about the reason beneath it.
“It didn’t happen all of sudden,” admits Sonia, who further adds, “Things weren’t really good between us due to lack of basic understanding. We had more difference of opinion, and finally we had no options other than splitting up.”
Indeed, Sonia clearly stated that both of them will remain in touch as friends, and she wishes Selva all the best for a successful endeavor. The actress refuses to speak up about “Andrea’, who is reported to be the major impediment of their happy life.
All that she’s concerned about is to continue acting in films, as there are more offers. As well, the actress is eagerly waiting for the release of “Aayirathil Oruvan’, as she has been associated with this project.

Theatre will never die, says Rajnikant

He started his career on stage and now Tamil superstar Rajnikant urges the film industry to encourage plays as he knows theatre will be there, always.
“Stage play will never die… it will stay forever. I started my career on stage. I have done over 25 plays in Bangalore. When my friends saw my performance on stage, they encouraged me to act in Tamil films. The first thing I did was to come to Chennai and join the film institute,” said Rajnikant Sunday.

He was speaking on the valedictory of Ninaivalaigal, a drama festival organised by South Indian Artists Association, Nadigar Sangam.

Walking down memory lane, Rajnikant said: “In 1979, when I started my career, I was denied entry into the Nadigar Sangam premise when I came on my scooter to watch the play ‘Ashok Chakravarthi’ featuring Sivaji Ganesan.

“But I’m lucky enough to have been associated with great actors like Sivaji Ganesan, N.T. Rama Rao and Raj Kumar. I expressed to them my desire to start a drama troupe that was received well by them,” he said.

He suggested that the South Indian Film Artistes Association should utilise the vacant space inside the premise of Nadigar Sangam by constructing a state-of-the-art auditorium. He feels it will fetch good money.

“We have space here. We should not keep it idle. I am here to do my best for the association. Let us build an auditorium here,” he said.

On the occasion, he honoured M.N. Rajam and Anjali Devi.

A play featuring Sarath Kumar, Radharavi and Swathi was staged.

Interview with Vikram

There’s nothing that can stop Vikram walking on air now. He’s much excited for couple of reasons: ‘Kandasamy’ – His ever biggest opening with record-breaking sales releasing on August 21 and well, other one is long dream run turning into reality. It’s all about working with ace filmmaker Mani Rathnam…

Here we’ve Vikram, who does something, more than shooting breeze…

So, how about Kanthaswamy?

I would say, it’s the earnest hard work of entire team that had really urged me to put more and more efforts for perfection. For sure, this would be a special film for all the buffs of Tamil Cinema and I looking out for the release as an audience as well.

Looks like your dream of working with Mani Rathnam has come true?

Definitely, it’s a blessing to work with such filmmakers. Auteur Mani Rathnam and Bala are the best perfectionists in tinsel town, who don’t compromise with certain things at any extent. Working with Mani Rathnam was a blissful moment as I had got through unique experience. We shot across locales of Ooty, dense forests of Kerala, thickly-populated areas of Kolkata and cold-climatic area of Madhya Pradesh.

Naturally, you should’ve gained a different experience while working with ‘Raavan’

Mani Rathnam can be best ennobled as a warrior on battle ground, when he’s on the shooting spots. He has everything pre-planned in his mind and knows the limit of reality to be delivered on the screens. He never allows exaggeration to preponderate in the final take. Abhishek and Aishwarya were contrastive in their nature. Abhishek was so jovial who would remain on the sets even after his portions are finished. When it comes to Aishwarya Rai, she’s so professional and encouraging.

How do you carry persona of every character with excellence?

I inhale the traits of every character I perform in each film. I live deeply under the skin of characterization even during non-shooting periods. That precisely helps me out in elevating the roles’ traits.

How about your Bollywood dreams?

Many say that Language isn’t a barrier. Possibly, I would say an actor must understand the language first and that would alone get them right into the feel. All my focus is in South Indian films as I have god linguistic skills in all the languages.

So, we heard you’ll soon direct a film?

Naturally, I am much interested in direction. Every actor has his dreams of achieving the designation of ‘Captain of Ship’. Working with so many filmmakers Shankar, Bala, Mani Rathnam, I have gained unique experience. Within next 5 years, I am sure to direct a flick.

Very often, we hear that Tamil film industry is hero-oriented?

Maybe, but according to me, I solely believe and act pertaining to director’s taste and requests.

Anything specific about your dream role ?

I am performing a role that is close-to-my-heart in Selvaraghavan’s next film. I am curiously waiting for the film’s shooting to commence.

Are you an ardent believer of God?

Definitely, I put all my trust in God and he has gifted me with success. Hope, he makes me an actor in next birth as well.

Kanthasamy Movie Review

Review- Kanthasamy
Producer- Kalaipuli.S.Thanu
Director- Susi Ganeshan
Cast- Vikram, Shriya, Prabhu, Ashish Vidyarthi, Vadivelu etc
Written by : Susi Ganesan
Music: Devi Sri Prasad
Distributed By : Kalaipuli International
Budget : Rs.80 crores

So, what do you expect from ‘Kanthasamy’, the latest film from Chiyaan Vikram? Obviously a film where Vikram dons a mask (the posters make us understand that) and leads a crusade against the baddies in our society. And your expectations, if it’s on these lines, is justified, 100 percent. And ‘Kanthasamy’ is shot on a big budget, extensively on foreign locations and in style. Yes, style it is. And substance? That of course is a question rather difficult to answer.

Well coming to the movie. It all begins from a temple dedicated to Kanthasamy (another name of Lord Muruga) in a small town in Tamil Nadu where you can submit your pleas and plaints in the form of letters which you can tie on to a tree. The temple is flocked by hundreds, especially the poor and the needy, who are on the look-out for an end to their worries. And each one of these hundreds of thousands of pleas is taken care of. Our hero, Kanthasamy IPS (Vikram), who’s working with the CBI, sees to it that these grievances are all redressed. He dons a mask and the get-up of a rooster, and strutting around like one, appears, mostly in the night, flying around, fighting et al and grabbing from the extremely rich the money that they had earned by unfair means and then ensures that these, packed in small bags, reaches the hands of the needy and the poor. Assisted by a group of his friends, all of them working in government departments that deals with detecting and amassing illegally earned money, Kanthasamy IPS goes about conducting raids on the baddies (typical filmi baddies, especially the Shankar brand of baddies), busting with a hammer the places where the illegal money is hidden. But nobody knows the connection between Kanthasamy IPS and the Kanthasamy who redresses the grievances of the people. It’s in this context that the DIG of police Paranthaman (Prabhu) takes it upon himself to nab the person who’s behind all this. So it’s now the cop versus the hero. And into this comes in our heroine, Subbalakshmi (Shriya), who is the daughter of one of the baddies, played by Ashish Vidyarthi.

Well, a good subject for a masala flick, with enough scope for all ingredients too. To some extent Susi Ganeshan and team had worked it out well. But there are places where we feel disgusted with the proceedings and the film, as a whole, doesn’t seem great work. On day one, in a theatre in Ernakulam, a young guy was seen texting a message to a friend, just about thirty minutes into the movie- “Am watching Kanthasamy…paisa muthalaavum (worth your money)…come watch Shriya…”. At that point he was right. But at a later stage, well past the interval, didn’t I see the very same guy tending to yawn and looking all exhausted? You even seem to be wondering what Shriya is doing in the movie. You have seen it all before, it seems at certain points. And some scenes are simply unimpressive. Vadivelu is not bad, but some of his scenes have gone waste. And the scene where Vikram appears in a feminine get-up, there’s nothing outstanding about it at all. Doesn’t it seem disgusting too? Well, there are some flashy, well shot sequences that leave you wonder struck. There are beautiful locales that are filmed impressively. But on the whole, the film is no outstanding work at all. Just so so. Nothing compared to ‘Anniyan’. And even ‘Bheema’ was better. Was wondering why the people of Kerala throng theatres to watch ‘Kanthasamy’ in such large numbers (the turn out on day one at all centres was great, something that you would like to call ‘terrific’) while they don’t seem to care a whit for better-made films like ‘Nadodigal’. Of course Tamilians need to be appreciated because if they throng the theatres to see such mass entertainers, they also show the same enthusiasm for seeing films like ‘Nadodigal’, ‘Subrahmaniyapuram’, ‘Autograph’ etc. This incidentally reminded me of a group of young guys in a small town in our ‘educated’, ‘elite’ Kerala dancing drunkenly and then going for a fist-fight with the theatre management, all during the song “Kangal irandaal…” in ‘Subrahmaniyapuram’, while their counterparts in Tamil Nadu had the sensibility to enjoy and relish the song and the movie as a whole itself.

Performances

Vikram has given a good performance as Kanthasamy. A dedicated actor that he is, he has attempted to do full justice to the role. But this definitely is not his best and nowhere near his performance in ‘Anniyan’ or ‘Sethu’. Shriya is good and adds to the oomph factor too with her dance numbers and all. It’s really great that our directors don’t need to go seeking other actresses for the ‘Oomph’ factor when the heroines can do it themselves. Prabhu is just about OK and has nothing much to do. Ashish Vidyarthi is his usual self. And so is Vadivelu.

Technical aspects

Technically the film is no doubt a treat to watch. Cinematography by Ekambaran is excellent. And art-director Thotta Tharani has done a brilliant job. Editing, costume-designing etc deserve mention.

Music

The background score is fine, but the songs are just about OK. Vikram anyhow has proved himself a good singer. ‘Excuse me, Mr. Kanthasamy…”, “Meow, Meow…” etc are no doubt trendy, but won’t have a long life. The songs have been visualised in the most flashy of manners.

Script

Nothing much to say about the script, penned by Susi Ganeshan himself. It’s all just average and usual. He could have worked it out better.

Direction

Coming to direction, it seems Susi, groomed under Mani Rathinam, has tried going the Shankar way to make am impact at the box office (’Kanthasamy’ no doubt will earn him more mileage than his earlier three films) and has eventually landed up being neither here nor there. Of course he is well in control of things and have filmed things the way he wanted them to be. But he seems a bit confused about his way of filmmaking. Susi anyhow has given a good performance as an actor, appearing in a guest-like role.

Unnaipol Oruvan for Sep18

Mohanlal and Kamalhassan's first coming together in 'Unnaipol Oruvan' will get to theatres ,this September. Vijay’s 51st movie with Dharani

Vijay is busy with ‘Vettaikaran’ as of now and he has also planned about his 50th movie. What next? This is an outline about our Illayathalapathy’s 51st movie. The hype is high whenever Vijay starts a film and for this project people may even get impatient.

After the superhit film ‘Gilli’, Dharani and Vijay joined together with a lot of expectations for ‘Kuruvi’. So, this time Vijay has give another opening for Dharani to direct his 51st film.

Another interesting thing is... The Director of Vijay’s ‘Vettaikaran’ Babu Sivan is none other than a former associate of director Dharani. Recently, Dharani and Vijay were spotted together for the audio launch function of Suriya’s ‘Aadhavan’. Dharani and Vijay seem to maintain a kinda close relation always uh...?

Sources say that Vijay has signed the project for a whooping remuneration and had also received a big sum as an advance. And do you know who the producer of this big budget is? He is a man who started his first project with co-producing Vijay’s ‘Kadhalukku Mariyadhai’ that took the actor and the producer to great heights. Yeah! Vijay’s 51st film will be produced by Aaskar Ravichandran.

All we can do as of now is to be patient and wait for further official announcements from the team.

Shruti Haasan’s Directorial Ways!

Shruti Haasan is a true example of a multi-talented actress. And her recent stint explains it all!
As widely known, the pretty actress has been busy composing music for her father’s film “Unnaipol Oruvan’, the Tamil remake of “A Wednesday’. But Shruti sure doesn’t believe in restricting talent… in the process she even conceptualized the music video of the film!
And if that’s not all, the leggy actress has also co-directed the music video!
Well, having inherited the lethal combination of beauty and brains from her parents, we sure are not surprised!
And we have it from confirmed sources that the song is a hip-hop number titled ‘Vaanum Ellai Illai’. Also called ‘Easier Said than Done’, it features the very popular International Rapper Blasé!
Insiders claim that the music video is a modern take on the theme of the film and contains lots of elements from the film. It’s actually a contemporary expression of the same subject and the actress is using hip-hop to spread a political message.
To add to the finesse of the music video, Shruti’s very pretty sister– Akshara has been roped in for the project too! The junior Haasan is a trained hip-hop and jazz dancer. Hence, it’s no surprise that Akshara is the choreographer of the music video!
No doubt, talent runs in the Haasan family!

Road to be named after Kamal Hassan?

A Tamil television channel is organising a month-long event to commemorate veteran actor Kamal Hassan completing 50 years in the industry - and it also wants a road here to be named after the star.
Addressing a press conference organised by Vijay TV, actor Sharath Kumar said he will be presenting a memorandum to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi to rename Eldams Road as Dr Kamal Hassan road.

“Renaming the road on which Kamal sir has been living for years would be an apt way of celebrating this great actor, who has completed 50 years in the Tamil film industry,” Kumar said.

TAMIL FILM REVIEW: Kanthaswamy

Kanthaswamy- Purely Vikram’s show, Susi Ganeshan disappoints
Banner: V Creations
Production: Kalaipuli S Dhanu
Direction: Susi Ganeshan
Star-casts: Vikram, Shriya Charan, Vadivelu, Prabhu, Krishna and others
Music: Devi Sri Prasad
So, you’ve been waiting for a long time for the most expected biggie of this year. Well, was this wait worth? Actually, it’s not really big. With a running length of 3 plus hrs, the film lacks solidity in conceptualization of script and screenplay. The film’s script reminds us of Vikram’s previous films “Anniyan’ and “Samurai’. Susi Ganeshan seems to have strongly focused on technical aspects, but drops off instantly when it comes to narration.
The film starts-off well on a good note, but as the suspense is broken in the early moments; you lose your interests. The film is all about Vikram and only Vikram. The actor stuns us with his top-notch performance in all characterizations. Especially his physique and gestures have been stupendously delivered.
The film opens with needy and underprivileged devotees raising their prayers to God Kanthaswamy through a note of petition. On the very next day you’ve their petitions granted (monetary aids in particular). There comes the Superhero Kanthaswamy– a superhero taking the baddies to task and delivering justice to the innocent souls.
And then comes a sincere CBI officer Kanthaswamy (Vikram), tracking the top-on-list of big shots possessing excess black money. He comes across a leading tycoon (Ashish Vidyarthi) and seizes his property worth billions. The tycoon’s daughter- Subalakshmi (Shriya Charan) vows to seek revenge on him and gradually that turns to be a different story, of that of a love affair. But, now the biggest question arrives. Who’s actually Kanthaswamy? Is he the super-hero, or is there any link between them. What unfolds next is a series of incidents where the suspense is broken at early moments slightly diminishing our interests. As mentioned earlier, Vikram spells a fantabulous job on his performance. He is so zippy as a romantic guy and well on a superhero role. But, in the part of superhero, his performance seems to be mediocre. Blame the stunt department In most of the sequences, it looks slight amateurish. And again, over the in “Thai Chi’ stunt in Mexico, the complete drama is absurd. What’s the reason behind blindfolding his eyes and taking him into tasks of fists? We’ve got to ask Susi Ganeshan. Even, if it falls into the category of commercial cinema, this isn’t something that we expect from such a brilliant team. Shriya Charan just falls off shorter in expectation. Looks like she had a no idea about exposing skin shows, and win applause of audiences… Nay The filmmaker could’ve opted for someone else for the female lead. In most of the parts, Shriya strongly imitates Angelina Jolie, which turns out to yield different results, some that she may not be expecting. Prabhu, Krishna and Ashish Vidyarthi have done justice to their role. Vadivelu does entertain us in few parts with his rib-tickling comedy tracks. Mansoor Ali Khan is okay.
Musical score by Devi Sri Prasad sounded good enough on tracks, but nothing seems to be appreciative on the screens. All throughout the background score, we hear nothing but loud-sounded percussions of signature song “Kanda…Kanda… Kanthaswamy’. Ekambaram’s cinematography has eye-catching visuals, especially in Mexico. Nevertheless, the dark yellowish-orange tone blurs your eyes after certain extent. Editing could’ve been crisp without random cuts.
As mentioned earlier, very soon we get to hear the suspense broken down that gradually scatters the audience attention in later moments.
Possibly, with the tickets sold out for the first week, producers and distributors will have their pockets full with good profits. But when it comes to critical analysis, the film has nothing extraordinary.

“I will never turn to glamour to survive in the industry. I intend to continue doing deglamourised roles because it suits me best,” Saranya told IANS.

She is also choosy about roles. After the success of her Tamil film “Vennila Kabadikuzhu”, Saranya was flooded with offers, but the actress has turned them down.

Right now she is only doing a Malayalam film. Titled “Chemistry”, it is being directed by noted Malayalam film director Viji Thampi and the actress is paired with a newcomer.

Ask whether she is neglecting Tamil movies, she said: “I’m listening to scripts and the moment I will come across a script that touches my soul, I will take next available flight to Chennai. I’ll accept an offer only if I will feel that I can relate to the character in the script.

Bikini for Vimala Raman

The bikini seems to be the latest fad and from Bollywood to Mollywood, actresses seem to be getting into the two-piece swimsuit. Actress Nayantara did it, so did Anushka and Priyamani. So why will Vimala Raman stay far behind? The Tamil-Telugu-Malayalam actress, who was last seen in Telugu film, Evaraina Epudaina, directed by Varun Sandesh, will also be seen in a bikini in her latest Telugu film, Lover Boy.
Director V.N. Aditya’s Lover Boy stars Tarun opposite Vimala Raman and is produced by Supreme Raju Harwani and Gogineni Srinivas. It went on floors recently when superstar Chiranjeevi gave the clap for the muhurat shot at Rama Naidu Studios and D. Suresh Babu switched on the camera. A romantic drama, Lover Boy is being shot in foreign locales such as Bangkok and Malaysia for around 40 days.

Not much story or romance in ‘Pokkisham’

Film: “Pokkisham”
Cast: Cheran, Padmapriya, Ilavarasu, Vijay Kumar, Aryan Rajesh and others
Director: Cheran; Music Composer: Sabesh Murali

At a time when the technology has made inroads in our lives thanks to cellphones and internet, actor-director Cheran takes a nostalgic ride with “Pokkisham” - the film narrates the story of a couple who strengthened their bonding with love letters.

“Pokkisham” moves at a snail pace and is one of the drawbacks of the romance saga.

No doubt it is a daring attempt by Cheran in a time when masala movies dominate the box office. But the filmmaker, who had given movies like “Porkalam” and “Vettri Kodi Kattu”, doesn’t make a mark. The screenplay is dull and staggers from the beginning.

The film revolves around Mahesh (Aryan Rajesh) who stumbles upon his father Lenin’s (Cheran) love letters. His dad had passed away few years ago.

After that the director takes the audiences on a flashback to the 1970s — it shows Lenin as a sailor in Kolkata. He meets Nadhira, a literature student from Nagore at a hospital where Lenin’s father (Vijay Kumar) was admitted. Lenin and Nadhira share a good rapport as both of them have interest in literature.

After that they communicate with each other through letters. They regularly write to each other and exchange their views on various things. Slowly their friendship turns into romance.

But religion come in their way — Nadhira’s father plays a game to separate them and he succeeds. Nadhira disappears without informing Lenin.

After learning his father’s past, Mahesh embarks on a journey to find Nadhira so that he can hand her over those letters that his father had written after the forced separation.

Cheran has opted for a strong technical team — Vairabalan’s art work is excellent as manages to recreate the busy Kolkata roads of 1970s. Cinematographer Rajesh Yadav skilfully captures varied regions of Nagore, Kolkata, Chennai and Malaysia.

There are too many songs but Sabesh Murali’s compositions fails to impress. Only one song - “Nila…nee kadhal” - stands out. Though the musical duo has done reasonably well in the climax, the overall background score is jarring.

The way Cheran explains love and agony through dialogues is more like a verbal attack on the audiences. Cheran has his limitations. He should have opted for a substantial story that could be made into an engrossing tale. Predictable script and slow pace mar the film.

As an actor too Cheran fails to impress. It is Padmapriya who steals the show with her expressive eyes and strong facial expressions. Vijay Kumar, Ilavarsu and Aryan Rajesh too play their part well.

Hello, I’m Not Twittering- Asin loses her sense of humor!

“Hey There Asin Thottumkal Is Using Twitter,” declares the latest social networking website, and then goes on to give us gems like “I want to act in Tamil movie” from the actress.
There’s just one problem. Asin is not on Twitter…or any of the social networking websites. And she can’t laugh off the impersonations any longer.
Asin has a very serious problem. She has impersonators on all the major social-networking websites. “I was ready to overlook these fake IDs using my name as long as they weren’t harmful. But now the problem is getting out of hand.”
The other night a colleague had a whole long conversation with “Asin’ and called up the next day to share her excitement about what an intimate conversation they had.
“I nearly fell off my chair. I won’t name this actress. But she said we shared our most intimate secrets on Facebook. I nearly fell off my chair and asked her whom did she share her secrets with. Because most certainly, it was not me. Two days ago, a journalist came to interview me and said she got all the information on me from what I had written on Twitter. For the record, I’m not on any of the social-networking websites. Apart from my own website, I am not on the Internet for any other purpose.I started blogging even before Aamir did in August 2005,”Asin declares proudly.
Asin is aghast. “I was clubbed with Chetan Bhagat and Shashi Tharoor, and put on a social networking website. But I’m not on Orkut, Facebook or Twitter. Apparently there are lots of fake profiles.”
The lies about Asin don’t end at virtual reality. “It’s been ages since I have had non-vegetarian food. For all practical purposes I’m a vegetarian. But I read this horrible report about how I love all kinds of exotic meats. I haven’t been approached by PETA. But that doesn’t mean I’ve to go the other way.”

Reema Sen confused on ‘Raavana’ and ‘Aayirathil Oruvan’

Oh! She’s perplexed over the best deals now. Actress Reema shot to fame with her debut film “Minnale’. But later, she lost her market due to not-so-good offers. Nearly a couple of years back, Selvaraghavan roped the actress for his exceptional flick “Aayirathil Oruvan’ that was recently completed.
The actress who had spent her days across the bushy forests under hot-sun got herself into rejuvenations on looks. But all of sudden, Selvaraghavan buzzed up and asked to hurry up for re-shooting some sequences. The actress had no issues and came up with an affirmative response, until she received a call from Mani Rathnam’s office.
Mani Rathnam proposed over the deal of enacting the “Mandodari’ role in his “Raavana’ (earlier refused by Nayanthara). With no options left, Reema Sen agreed for the 10-day shoot, which completes filming schedules of bilingual film. But unfortunately, shooting schedules for both the film falls on the same dates and this leaves Reema much puzzled…

Samuthirakani refuses Ram Gopal Varma’s deal on ‘Nadodigal’

Possibly, director Samuthirakani should’ve changed his plans after watching “Ram Gopal Varma Ke Aag’. Recently, sources had revealed that filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma had planned to acquire remake rights of his “Nadodigal’ in Hindi. Although, close friends of Samuthirakani advised to sell the remake rights, he hasn’t let his mind towards such decisions.
“Samuthirakani has no plans on selling the rights as he will remake the film and soon will finalize the deal with reigning stars of Bollywood” says a closer source. Meanwhile, Samuthirakani has now planned to host a private screening for Bollywood celebrities in Mumbai.
The Telugu version of “Nadodigal’ will start rolling by next month.

Swine Flu disrupts entire Kollywood

The entire K-town is thrown into complete disorder with panic rising on swine flu. The epidemic disease has really caused more havoc in Kollywood as most of the filming schedules have been called-off. Producers of “ASAL’ starring Ajith Kumar, Sameera Reddy and Bhavana in lead roles had planned to shoot the film across exotic locations of Turkey, Ireland, Italy, Netherlands, and Hungary etc…
Unluckily, director Saran cancelled shooting over those locations fearing for H1N1 flu. At present, the film has been completely shot in Malaysia, as it is considered to be the safest place.
Much similarly, shooting for other South Indian films, slated to be held in foreign locations have been struck down. Instead, producers have started looking out for local areas for filming those portions, which were supposed to be canned abroad. Likewise earlier, plans were made to shoot Trisha-Gopichand starrer “Sankam’ in South America. But due to high-alerts on swine flue, the crew has shifted to Australia.

Cheran to direct Vishal in ‘Paarasiga Raja’

Years back, filmmaker Cheran had to approach various actors for his “Autograph’. With everyone rejecting his offer, he himself donned the lead role and tuned spotlights on him. Nevertheless, ever since Cheran’s previous directorial “Maaya Kannadi’ flunked at the box-office, he hadn’t made any films.
After a long sabbatical, he makes his comeback as a director with “Pokkisham’ and performs lead roles as well. The film is produced by Hitesh Jhabak and will hit the screens on August 14. Censor board officials have passed “U’ certificate congratulating Cheran for having delivered a poignant flick.
By end of this month, Cheran will start shooting for Mysskin’s directorial “Yudham Sei’, which features him in the role of CBCID officer. Meanwhile, he is penning script for his other project titled “Paarasiga Raja’ and talks are going on with Vishal to play the lead role.

Tamil Movie Sindhanai Sei Review

Cast: Yuvan, Sashanth, Bala, Madhu Sharma, Madhu Priya, Kadhal Dhandapani Direction: Yuvan
Production: RMA Factory Production Music: Thaman

Sindhanai Sei by debutant director Yuvan is about five friends, who have failed to succeed in life, joining hands with an ulterior motive. The movie begins as an emotional drama and becomes an action-flick dealing with bank robbery.

Yuvan, who has also donned the protagonist’s role, has come out with a different theme. He has looked into the ill-effects of humiliation caused by inabilities. The psychological insight has been presented in the backdrop of an engrossing tale of a crime.

Adhi (Yuvan) is one of those who haven’t made any impact during school life. After being neglected by his family as a useless fellow, Adhi comes to city to seek his livelihood where he meets a rich and beautiful Gayathri (Madhu Priya) and instantly falls for her. To his surprise, the girl too falls in love with him and they get married in just a month. But they get separated in just a day.

Shattered Yuvan meets his four friends, who studied with him in school. They too are struggling to make both ends meet. Together they hatch a conspiracy to rob a bank. Their clever plan puzzles police after robbery. After getting the money, mistrust crops up. Friends get killed one after another and the hunt for the killer follows. Yuvan, who survives, tries to settle scores with his conceived offenders.

Yuvan has conceived a story with complexities and executed it well. He has handled the psychological aspect of the experiences in a commendable manner. The movie progresses in a brisk pace post interval but songs apply speed brakes.

The problem with the script is that it becomes predictable after a point. The pre climax sequences are dragged beyond a limit and hence they try our patience.

Music director Thaman (one of the boys in Shankar's Boys) has given a couple of racy songs.

On the whole, Sindhanai Sei impresses with a new theme and a different treatment despite a few flaws and predictability in the narrative.

Prakash Raj marries Mahila Rajyam chief?

behind flutter at Kollywood and Tollywood after it carried non-stop reports that Prakash Raj has married Shobha Rani, the chief of Mahila Rajyam.

Meanwhile, circles close to the actor and the woman politician denied the reports and dubbed them as mere rumours.

Kamal, Gautham, Rajini and KS Ravikumar in tricky situations

Thiru Thiru Thuru Thuru is the name of the film that is directed by Nandhini, who was an assistant to director Priya. The title indicates the hero who gawks all the time and the heroine who is twitchy all through the film. This film’s audio was launched at a function held in Chennai’s Satyam Cineplex. Noted film personalities like Kamal Haasan, Gautham Menon and KS Ravi Kumar participated in the event. Those present also shared their experiences in situations where they were forced to gawk (Thiru Thiru) and be fidgety (Thuru Thuru).

Speaking at the function, Gautham Menon said that he remembered gawking at the age of nineteen when he visited his girlfriend’s house and her mom made a sudden entry. The director, however, refused to disclose further details. He also recalled that while directing Vettayadu Vilayadu, he wanted Kamal Haasan to re-shoot a scene according to his specifications. The director after much hesitation brought it to Kamal’s notice that he wanted the scene his way to which the actor agreed and asked him to act it out. The director recalls this was a situation in which he was restive. Gautham said that all his films since then have been moving on a faster pace.

Kamal Haasan said that while shooting for a scene in Devar Magan he felt that Sivaji Ganesan could do much better. Without a second thought, the actor mentioned it to the late actor, who took it in good stride and completed the scene according to Kamal’s input.

In yet another situation, also involving Sivaji Ganesan, director KS Ravi Kumar said that while shooting for Padayappa he could not find a place to smoke with Sivaji being on the sets all through the day. On finding a secluded spot in the art room, Ravi Kumar entered it only to find Superstar Rajinikanth smoking. When Sivaji enquired about the cigarette smell on the sets, the gawky director shifted the blame on a colleague.

Ravichandran slows down and relaxes

Star Ravichandran has planned to slow down, relax and take the backseat. According to him, he has reached a stage where now he feels that he doesn’t need his films to release every three months. All that he wants to concentrate on now is to make good and meaningful films and keep his fans happy. As of now, his current film is Manjina Hani of which- some feel its complete, while some say he is planning to re-shoot some parts of it. But according to Ravi, all that is left to be shot in the film are the songs. He personally feels that, as the film is about the sentiments of a child, it is going to click with the masses.
The son of the superstar is also said to be all geared up to make his entry and is currently said to be busy with his acting and dance classes. Ravi has been giving a lot of acting tips over the years to his son, as he felt that his son always had the spark in him to make it in cinema.

Aishwarya happy with two mega southern projects

Bollywood actress Aishwarya Rai is elated over bagging the main leads in two mega south Indian projects - Mani Ratnam’s “Ravan” and Shankar’s “Endhiran”.
“Shankar had approached me previously to work with him, but it never materialised. Finally, everything landed in place and here we are working together after 10 years,” said Aishwarya on the sets of “Ravan”.

Tamil superstar Rajinikant, who is playing the male lead in “Endhiran”, was also very keen to work with Aishwarya and had tried to sign her for his earlier ventures - “Padaiyappa” and “Chandramukhi”, but the actress could not spare the dates.

Speaking about Ratnam’s “Ravan”, in which she once again teams up with her husband Abhishek Bachchan, Aishwarya said: “I don’t want to reveal much about it. Working with Mani is always a delight. He is a man of perfection. I am lucky to act in his movies again and again.”

Aishwarya was earlier seen in Ratnam’s “Iruvar” and “Guru”, in which Abhishek was in the main lead.

While shooting for “Ravan” in the jungles of Kerala, the entire cast and crew had a scary experience when an elephant ran amok and killed 51-year-old mahout Andavan.

The actors including Abhishek, Aishwarya, Vikram, Prabhu and Munna had to take shelter in a guest house.

According to sources, the film personalities spent the night in the forest guest house and survived on bread and eggs. After 12 hours of tension and waiting, the crew returned to their hotel.

Now the cast and crew of “Ravan” has moved to Ooty where the remaining portions of the film will be shot.

"I enjoyed Jai’s company" - Lakshmi Rai

From girl-next-door to bikini bombshell, Lakshmi Rai has come a long way. Though her initial films did not do well at the B.O. the leggy lass sure got noticed. Hers has been a steady rise to fame cemented by Dhaam Dhoom where she played a lawyer.

She has had a fair share of rumors though what put the media on overdrive was her link-up with Indian Cricket Captain, Mahendra Singh Dhoni. Her bike rides with him made headlines and speculations about a brewing marriage. We quiz her on Dhoni, her no-holds barred bold onscreen attitudes and more.
BW: How did you get your break?

Lakshmi Rai: I was a model to begin with and later enrolled myself in an acting school. After completing my course, I won Miss Karnataka crown which fetched me a role in a Kannada film with Rajkumar’s son. When I was doing it, I got an offer in Karka Kasadara and I just continued.

You have worked in different languages, which industries do you think you really fit in?

Undoubtedly, it is the Tamil industry as I have many projects here. I have also done many films here and this industry is the one that has brought me recognition. After this only, I became popular and a star in Malayalam film industry.

You have done a lot of glamour? Will you go beyond this?

Well, if a character needs ultra-glamour, I will definitely do it. However, I will not do glamour just for the sake of glamour. I will do as much glamour as a role requires and not cross my limits.

How comfortable are you doing intimate scenes?

" I will not do glamour

just for the sake

of glamour "

If my character demands it, say to kiss my co-star or anybody and it’s a deep love story, I will do it. The comfort level has to be created and the kissing scenes cannot be shot on the first day of the shoot. If the director feels that a particular scene is needed, there must be good chemistry which needs to be worked between the pair in question. And that’s when the scene would turn out well. If the character demands, there is nothing wrong and I am open to doing such scenes.

You have been the target of a lot of gossip. How do you react to this?

" Gossip is unavoidable

in this profession "

Gossip is unavoidable in this profession. There will be some gossip today and something tomorrow, one must listen to it with one ear and let it out through the other. It’s part and parcel of this industry and I don’t react to it. It’s only me and the person who is linked (with me) will know the truth. I am used to all these now. When you say Lakshmi Rai, there will be a lot of gossip. Once you become a star and are known, there will be gossip.

Can you say something about your relationship with Dhoni?

Dhoni and I are friends. I am an actress and he is the Indian cricket team’s captain. Dhoni is a national figure and I am a popular figure. So linking both of us is news that sells. He has been linked with many people but the names have not been repeated, but in my case it has been repeated and this is a selling point for the media. It’s just to create an attention. Some people in the audience will believe it and some won’t. We tell the truth but if they don’t believe it, what can be done? We have nothing in our hearts.

" Dhoni is a national figure

and I am a popular figure "

You are from a non-filmi background. How does your family react to all this gossip?

My family is completely non-filmi and conservative. Initially they were taking rumors too seriously. It was my duty to convince them that this was part of my profession. Soon, they got used to it. Only my family knows what I am doing and where I am, they don’t believe in outside news. But it is only natural for any parent to become anxious about these things. They do feel insecure sometimes but realize that I am not the only one who is targeted and there are also other actresses who are at the receiving end. Bollywood is all about rumors and it happens only when you are famous. So every industry has gossips and rumors but it depends on one’s mentality in taking it. My parents know what I am and they trust in me. Without their knowledge I will not do anything.

How was the experience working with Jeeva in Dhaam Dhoom?

Firstly, I would like to say he was amazing, fantastic and it was an unforgettable experience working with him. He was so professional, dedicated and is extremely motivating. While shooting he is a different person and while not shooting he is completely different. He used to tell me never to club friendship and professionalism. While shooting, he kept friendship aside as he wanted the best output. It’s very sad we lost him. I still can’t believe it; it’s a very great loss for the industry.

What about the Number 1 dancer tag?

I don’t know about this. I dance well and it’s up to the audience to say whether we are good dancers or bad dancers. As a dancer I feel I am ok and do my best.

Will you do item numbers?

No.

Tell us something about your role in Irumbukottai Murattu Singam

" You need energy,

stamina and strength

to ride a horse "

I wanted to do something different as I want every film of mine to be different. My audience should enjoy them. When director Simbu Devan told me the story of Irumbukottai Murattu Singam where I will be in a cowboy getup, I found it good and agreed. My character has developed a lot and gained importance and you will realize this when you see the film. The film has been shot with a brownish tone that gives it a Hollywood look. It’s an action film and I play a brave bold girl. I learnt to ride a horse and this is not an easy joke. It looks easy, but there are so many things to learn. You need energy, stamina and strength to ride a horse. The horse is not in our control and there must be perfect understanding

between the horse and the rider. You can’t change horses in the film and have to use the same one throughout. There were plenty of riding and chasing scenes. The first few days I had a lot of body pain. This film is one of those with sky- high expectations this year and has been shot like an English film. It’s very good and has a fun theme.

Your first few films did not do well. Did you think of quitting at that point?

My aim was to be a good actress in the Tamil industry and not to become famous. When you give your best you become famous. My aim was not to earn, I was born with a golden spoon and money was not important. My first few films did not give me recognition. Karka Kasadara was a not a bad film, it was a good entry. However after that I made wrong film choices but had belief in myself. I took a break of six months before Dhaam Dhoom and this was like a re-launch. I had a strong gut feeling and a resolve that I would only do a good film. I want to earn a name as a good actress.

" When you give your best

you become famous "

Heroines today are more of an eye candy. What do you think of this trend?

The generation is changing and people who are making films are trying something new. Everyone is making films that have everything for everyone.

Did you make any specific preparations before wearing a bikini?

" You can’t wear a bikini

just like that "

You can’t wear a bikini just like that. When the director told me about it, he told me to be prepared. You have to plan to carry it off well. For my type of body, everything in my wardrobe looks good but to sport a bikini, I had to lose weight. I prepared by working out and toning my body. For a bikini shot, you really need to be confident.

Tell us something about Jai as he was your costar in Vaamanan?

The first day Jai was very formal and reserved. But soon, he became friendly and it was like we had known each other for years. He has given two big hits like Chennai 600 028 and Subramaniapuram but has no attitude whatsoever. He makes you feel very comfortable and we were good friends working together. I enjoyed Jai’s company and we had a rollicking time on the sets.
